Cellist Jackson Sharp is located in Knoxville and teaches, performs, and competes locally. He plays in the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra as well as subbing with other local orchestras throughout Tennessee into North Carolina such as the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony of the Mountains. He also has played with groups such as The Black Jacket Symphony and Milk Man & The Big Band at historic venues such as the Tennessee Theatre and the Bijou Theatre. Jackson worked for 2 years with the Knoxville Youth Symphony Orchestra Association as the Sinfonia Orchestra Manager. He has a studio of beginning and intermediate private students that he adores and is always looking to expand. Jackson plays in local musical productions regularly with professional and community theatres as well as local high schools. Most recently, he played in Mary Poppins, Once Upon a Mattress, Hello Dolly, Fiddler on the Roof, the Clarence Brown's productions of Kinky Boots and Knoxville, as well as Cattywampus Puppet Council's production of Solastalgia. Jackson also enjoys arranging and composing original compositions for cello and string ensembles as well as some improv work.
Jackson started the cello after receiving a cello for his 4th birthday. He grew up taking lessons via the Suzuki method and played in the Knoxville Youth Symphony Association from the time he was 7 up until he graduated high school. Jackson began to find success in the cello in 2016 when he was named principal cellist of the Knoxville Youth Chamber Orchestra. In 2017, he was a finalist in the Youth Aaliyah competition. In 2018, he was chosen as the principal cellist of the Jr. Clinic Orchestra in East Tennessee. In 2019, he was a finalist and 2nd prize recipient in the Tennessee Cello Workshop's Junior Division. In both 2019 and 2020, Jackson was chosen as the principal cellist of East Tennessee's Senior Clinic. He was even selected as the principal of the All-State orchestra in 2019. He qualified again in 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19. In 2020, Jackson was a finalist and the 2nd prize winner of the Tennessee Cello Workshop's High School division. In the summer of 2020, he attended the Cincinnati Young Artist Summer Cello Academy under Prof. Richard Aaron, Prof. Hans Jensen, and Dr. Nick Curry. In the fall of 2020, he was named the principal cellist of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra and held that title through 2022. Jackson was also named principal cellist of the All-State Orchestra in 2022. In the fall of 2022, Jackson started at the University of Tennessee studying cello under Dr. Wesley Baldwin. He earned the 3rd chair in the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra his freshman year and still plays in the orchestra to this day. He is Suzuki Book 1 certified and is planning on getting more certifications as he grows his studio.
Jackson was born and raised in Knoxville. He graduated from Hardin Valley Academy in the spring of 2022. He is the oldest of 4 siblings. As children, they all played the cello! Jackson is a double major at the University of Tennessee majoring in Finance with a collateral in Marketing in addition to his music degree. He is an avid sports enthusiast and cheers on the Vols in any sport he can find. He also enjoys board games, pickleball, and fantasy football.
